Bearden UMC Community Garden - Produce and Pest 8/23/26.  We harvested several times this week and put the produce in the gleaning baskets. I had some excitement on Saturday when I discover a baby king snake that I threw into our new raised bed with mulched leaves. I am very thankful to my volunteers, who help me to capture the snake and send it off to the forest this afternoon.  Today, we also did an nice harvest of okra, cucumbers, tomatoes, tromboncino squash, green beans, and peppers.   Last Thursday, we had a great harvest to put in the gleaning baskets. The garden is growing.  We harvested over 23 pounds of cucumbers, okra, green beanks, tromboncino squash, and tomatoes.  The Tromboncino squash is taking over the garden fence next to the building and producing big squash.  I am thankful for the good supply of food scraps on my red can. I need lots of compost for my new raised bed.  I alway check my food scraps before I put into our com...

Bearden UMC Community Garden - Harvest 7/23/26.  On Thursday, my garden friend Carol and I harvested over 40 lbs of green beans, okra, cucumbers, tomatoes, and tromboncino squash. The trombocino, which is in the zuchinni family, was very large (over 6 lbs) and our first squash. Because I had been with the Costa Mission Team, we had missed harvesting it earlier. The four squash plants had gone crazy growing up and out into the path and the fence by the shed. We have several more little trombocino squashes started and ready to harvest soon.   We had lots of large cucumbers, okra, and green beans.  Carol found alot of tomatoes that the excess rain had split.  We found a bee sleeping on a cucumber flower.  The garden plants are growing great with all the rain.  Our church operations and administrative assistant took a picture of our rain gauge last friday and we had 4 inches.  When I checked the rain gauge today we had over 8 inches. God ha...

Bearden UMC Community Garden - Okra, Cucumbers, etc. 6/19/26. Today, we harvested a few cucumbers, okra, peppers, tomatoes, and green beans, which we put in the blessing box. The veggies were picked up in less than an hour.  We received a free soil test from a UT Hort class. Soil testng at https://knox.tennessee.edu/agriculture-programs/soils/. Soil tesing is an important part of good gardening practices. We dug 10 holes at least 6 inches deep to collect 3 cups of soil per sample. We found a few healthly earth worms and lots of cut-up tires pieces.  Thanks, Leigh
