Produce and Pest 8/23/26

 Bearden UMC Community Garden - Produce and Pest 8/23/26. 

We harvested several times this week and put the produce in the gleaning baskets. I had some excitement on Saturday when I discover a baby king snake that I threw into our new raised bed with mulched leaves. I am very thankful to my volunteers, who help me to capture the snake and send it off to the forest this afternoon. 



Today, we also did an nice harvest of okra, cucumbers, tomatoes, tromboncino squash, green beans, and peppers. 



 Last Thursday, we had a great harvest to put in the gleaning baskets.
The garden is growing. 

We harvested over 23 pounds of cucumbers, okra, green beanks, tromboncino squash, and tomatoes. 

The Tromboncino squash is taking over the garden fence next to the building and producing big squash. 

I am thankful for the good supply of food scraps on my red can. I need lots of compost for my new raised bed. 

I alway check my food scraps before I put into our compost bins. This week, I removed a metal spoon and a plastic card holder from a bouquet of flowers. 

We have started the first layer on the next raised bed. I hope to finish this week. 

I am thankful for my harvesters and raised bed builders.

 Bearden UMC Community Garden - Seedlings 4/21/26 Today, we had some green bean seedling start to appear in bed #10.   We watered bed #10, 11, 1, and 2 to make sure the rest of the seedling come up. We moved the tomato and pepper plant out by bed #3, where we hope to plant them soon. The onion and carrot seedings in bed #4 are doing well.  Worked on another layer of compost in our bins.  The potatoes in bed #1 are looking great.  Thanks, Leigh

First Harvest 11/19/25

 Bearden UMC Community Garden - First Harvest 11/19/25 Today, we harvested kale, collard and mustard greens from bed #9 under the pastor's window to give away with the Thanksgiving boxes. Bed #9 We left the top inner leaves so the plants will continue to grow.  We harvested collards (12 oz), kale (11 oz), and mustard greens (3 oz) and greens can continue to produce leaves in bed #9.  Bed #1 has a cover crop of buckwheat.  Bed #3 with a cover crop of buckwheat.  Bed #4 is empty except for some herbs and flower at the front. Bed #5 with a cover crop of crimson clover.    Bed #6 with kale and mustard green plants donated by UT Kitchen Garden and planted today.  Bed #7 with beet seedlings. The seeds were provided by the Knox County Community Garden and Grower's Alliance.  Bed # 8 with Fava Bean seedlings, which are a great cover crop and produce beans to eat..  Bed # 10 with Fava Bean seedlings.  Bed # 11 with Fava Bean seedlings. ...

Compost Bin Building 3/28/26

 Bearden UMC Community Garden - Compost Bin Building 3/28/26.  Today, I had a great building crew and helpers work on our compost bins. We spent more time than anticipated and need to schedule a few more hours to finish the lids, handles, and flashing.  I appreciate my garden friends' help and their amazing abilities.  Thanks, Leigh
