Bearden UMC Community Garden - Beds #11 & 12 9/11/25.  This morning, my garden friend Mike and I set up two new garden beds. My husband Mike also helped with the second bed.  Mike sees no evil and Mike speaks no evil. Both are great garden helpers with amazing sense of humor.  All three new beds were set up this week using the old plastic dividers.  We set up our 11th bed on 9/11. Our base layer was cardboard stripped by Jordan and Avery. We had to pound in the spikes to keep the plastic divider in place.  We put a layer of weed and grass under the cardboard.  Thanks, Leigh

Raking and new bed - 9/08/25.

Bearden UMC Community Garden - Raking and new bed - 9/08/25.  Yesterday, I received some compostable leftovers fro Charles and Ann, which I used as the basis for a new bed. At the Fish Panry, Jordon and Avery collected cardboard and stripped it of tape for the base of the new garden bed.  This morning, Mike and I raked up more rubber mulch and set up a new garden in the playground.  New garden bed.  The cardboard, which Jordan and Avery stripped, was used as one of the base layer for the new bed.  Weeds and donated leftover veggies were used as the base layer to bring in the worms, who will till the soil for us. Mike helped me rake up the remaining rubber mulch so we could set up a new garden bed.  Jordan made this cute animated picture of me in the garden.  Mike and I plan to set up another bed on Thursday morning at 9 am. You are welcome to join us in the garden.  Thanks, Leigh

Collards, Kale, and Black-eyed Susans 9/5/25

Bearden UMC Community Garden - Collards, Kale, and Black-eyed Susans 9/5/25.  Today in the side, my garden friend Daleta and I planted Collard and Kale seedlings, which were donated to us from UT Gardens. We also planted Black-eyed Susans that I divided from my pollinator gardens. We also planted a basil plant, which grew roots from the cuttings used at VBS.  I received good news that we will soon be receiving a check from Knox County Community Gardens and Grower's Alliance to pay for our compost and manure. Praise God! Thanks, Leigh

Leaves & Storm 9/4/25

Bearden UMC Community Garden - Leaves & Storm 9/4/25 This week, we were able to get all of the mulched leaves layers on the garden beds. Today, we had quite the storm with hail and strong winds. An old kids pool that held dirt was blown across the garden and ended up at the far fence. A tarp that was over the old plastic dividers has blown away to who knows where. A huge limb came down next to the west parking lot. The garden beds all got watered.  My cabinet with gloves for volunteers and sign-in sheet was blown over during the Thursday storm. A big branch came down during the Thursday afternoon storm.  Before the storm, the beds were looking good and the blue kiddies pool and brown tarp were in place.  On Tuesday, Lindsey took a picture of  Tony and I. Tony has been a great garden friend, who helped move manure, compost, grass, and leaves. He is headed back to Altanta and family. I will miss his help.  The final layer of leaves is placed on the ...
