New Signs and Bed 8/16/26.

Bearden UMC Community Garden - New Signs and Bed 8/16/26.

This week, we added new signs for the community garden and gleaning baskets. We also added a new raised bed that we are filling with great soil.

Our orange Gleaning basket sign:

GLEANING BASKET at the edge of our field for YOU from the BUMC Community Garden.

YOU MATTER!

Leviticus 19:9-10 NIV: “When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the Lord your God.”

A new sign to identify the Community Garden:

Bearden UM Church Community Garden

The Mission of the BUMC Community Garden is to:

  1. Provide a source of highly nutritious fresh vegetable to area “food banks” and gleaning basket for distribution to persons in need;
  2. Effectively and efficiently manage the resources provided by Bearden United Methodist Church; and
  3. Provide a means for multi-generational members of the BUMC community to make personal, physical contribution for the betterment of the community.

Our new raised bed, which will have better soil than the soil with cut up tires.

Carol and Mike and other volunteers helped to put together our new raised bed.

Our first layer is cardboard, wood chips, then sticks and logs. The method is known as hugelkultur and the logs feed the bed with good nutrients.

I added compost from our compost bin plus leaves.

I added a few bags of Black Kow manure.

I added a layer of mulched leaves.

Our next layer will be from our pile of compost.

I could use some more logs to set our next bed.

We are still harvesting 10 to 20 pounds of produce every other day.

Blessings, Leigh
