Yesterday at the Knox County Master Gardener's meeting, I heard a presentation by Pastor Chris Battle about starting the Battlefield Farms (https://battlefieldfarm.org/), which was to help solve the food desert problem in East Knoxville. He also talked about the start of the Knox County Community Gardens and Grower's Alliance (https://knoxgardenalliance.org/), which our community garden is a member of. When he started the farm, they added gleaning baskets to the fences surround the farm to distribute food, which was based on Leviticus 19:9-10. I loved this idea and today added a basket to our fence with a sign about the gleaning basket and placed our harvest in the basket and fence. 

The sign says: 

GLEANING BASKET at the edge of our field for YOU from the BUMC Community Garden. YOU MATTER! Leviticus 19:9-10 NIV “When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the Lord your God.”


We had almost 17 lbs of cucumbers to place in the glean basket to the corner of the fence next to the parking lot.


I also put a sign at the blessing box.

The sign says:

Dear Neighbors, We have FRESH PRODUCE for you across the parking area in our GLEANING BASKETS on the fence of our BUMC Community Garden. Thanks, BUMC



We harvested over 25 lbs of tromboncinio squash, okra, tomatoes, and cucumbers.




  While we were in the garden, we had two people come by and collect fresh food from the gleaning basket and bag. One of the ladies was interested in working with us in the garden and gave us produce scrapes for our compost bins. 



God also watered a .25 inches while we were in the garden this evening. 


Now Battlefield Farms has a Veggie Van and Chris Battle is planning to open the One Five Grocery store where everything will sell for cost plus 5 cents (https://battlefieldfarm.org/one-five/). This grocery will be another opportunity, where we can donate our produce harvest.

 Bearden UMC Community Garden - Seedlings 4/21/26 Today, we had some green bean seedling start to appear in bed #10.   We watered bed #10, 11, 1, and 2 to make sure the rest of the seedling come up. We moved the tomato and pepper plant out by bed #3, where we hope to plant them soon. The onion and carrot seedings in bed #4 are doing well.  Worked on another layer of compost in our bins.  The potatoes in bed #1 are looking great.  Thanks, Leigh

in the Beginning April 2025

 Bearden United Methodist Church Community Garden History.  In 2024, Amelia Baker came up with the idea to start a community garden in an unused children's play ground with lawn and rubber mulch play areas. The Trustees approved the community garden project.  Amelia received an offer for her dream job and left BUMC in Summer 2024.  Leigh Cheek learn about the project and decided to pursue it along with becoming a Knox County Master Gardener. In January 2025, the Trustees approved the Community Garden Project. The project was delayed until after Easter and the Easter Egg Hunt for little kids in the playground. Below are pictures of the playground to the west of the sanctuary in March 2025. The biggest step to convert the soil to usable garden was the removal of the rubber mulch, known as Magic Mulch. First Harvest 11/19/25

 Bearden UMC Community Garden - First Harvest 11/19/25 Today, we harvested kale, collard and mustard greens from bed #9 under the pastor's window to give away with the Thanksgiving boxes. Bed #9 We left the top inner leaves so the plants will continue to grow.  We harvested collards (12 oz), kale (11 oz), and mustard greens (3 oz) and greens can continue to produce leaves in bed #9.  Bed #1 has a cover crop of buckwheat.  Bed #3 with a cover crop of buckwheat.  Bed #4 is empty except for some herbs and flower at the front. Bed #5 with a cover crop of crimson clover.    Bed #6 with kale and mustard green plants donated by UT Kitchen Garden and planted today.  Bed #7 with beet seedlings. The seeds were provided by the Knox County Community Garden and Grower's Alliance.  Bed # 8 with Fava Bean seedlings, which are a great cover crop and produce beans to eat..  Bed # 10 with Fava Bean seedlings.  Bed # 11 with Fava Bean seedlings. ...
