 Bearden UMC Community Garden - Giveaway Harvest 10/10/26.

On Saturday, we had a wonderful harvest and giveaway of 113 pounds. I am very thankful for my volunteers, who were willing to work in the rain. We got over an inch of rain. 



We trimmed back the tomato plants because the rain and wind last weekend leaned over our trellises. 



On Thursday, we harvested our sweet potatoes and let them set in the little greenhouse to cure to make them sweeter and their skins tougher.  



I used the sweet potato leaves in the compost. 



We did our first harvest of kale and collard greens in the new raised beds. 



I am thankful for member donations that let me buy cement blocks to prevent flooding in the side bed. 


The winter radish seedlings are coming up.

Soon, we will be taking down the cucumbers and peppers plants and trellis to plant winter vegetables.

 Bearden UMC Community Garden - Seedlings 4/21/26 Today, we had some green bean seedling start to appear in bed #10.   We watered bed #10, 11, 1, and 2 to make sure the rest of the seedling come up. We moved the tomato and pepper plant out by bed #3, where we hope to plant them soon. The onion and carrot seedings in bed #4 are doing well.  Worked on another layer of compost in our bins.  The potatoes in bed #1 are looking great.  Thanks, Leigh

First Harvest 11/19/25

 Bearden UMC Community Garden - First Harvest 11/19/25 Today, we harvested kale, collard and mustard greens from bed #9 under the pastor's window to give away with the Thanksgiving boxes. Bed #9 We left the top inner leaves so the plants will continue to grow.  We harvested collards (12 oz), kale (11 oz), and mustard greens (3 oz) and greens can continue to produce leaves in bed #9.  Bed #1 has a cover crop of buckwheat.  Bed #3 with a cover crop of buckwheat.  Bed #4 is empty except for some herbs and flower at the front. Bed #5 with a cover crop of crimson clover.    Bed #6 with kale and mustard green plants donated by UT Kitchen Garden and planted today.  Bed #7 with beet seedlings. The seeds were provided by the Knox County Community Garden and Grower's Alliance.  Bed # 8 with Fava Bean seedlings, which are a great cover crop and produce beans to eat..  Bed # 10 with Fava Bean seedlings.  Bed # 11 with Fava Bean seedlings. ...

Chipdrop 8/19/25

 Bearden United Methodist Church Community Garden - 1st Wood Chip Drop.  8/19/25 this afternoon, we received our first chipdrop, which is a free service offered by local arborists. This load of chips will be a great base layer for the garden and a lovely material for garden paths. After a year of being walked on, the chips break down into lovely compost.  We will be ordering more chips from Davey's Expert Tree Service. On Saturday, our garden friends lay out cardboard and spread these chips.
