Garlic 2/16/25

Image
Bearden UMC Community Garden - Garlic 2/16/25 In November, I planted garlic cloves in our greens bed along side of the building. Last week I noticed that half of my garlic shots had been pulled out. I have also found bags of miscellanous items in the garden. I suspect that a human has pulled up the sprouts. Most animals, like squirrels, do not like garlic, so I eliminate them as my suspect. I planted some more garlic today. I hope whoever took the garlic felt well fed.  Growing garlic resources: https://utianews.tennessee.edu/garlic-in-the-garden/ https://extension.illinois.edu/sites/default/files/growing_garlic_infosheet.pdf November is the usual time to plant garlic and then harvest in June.  Thanks, Leigh

Move wood chips 2/10/26

Bearden UMC Community Garden - Move wood chips 2/10/26 Today, Mike, Julio, and I had perfect weather to move dirt, leaves, and wood chips from the corner, where we plan to build the compost bins.  The corner is cleared and is ready for our construction in March.  The corner looked like this before Julio, Mike, and I started clearing the woodschips.  At the end of the path, Mike and I raked up more magic mulch (cut up tires). I was surprise about amount of magc mulch still on the ground.  Julio spread the wood chips. This area is looking much better.  This morning, I appreciated my garden friends help. Next I will be taking soil samples to send to UT Institute of Agriculture Soil, Plant, and Pest Center. I took samples last April and we will see how the garden soil is progressing. Thanks, Leigh

Warm weather 2/9/26

Bearden UMC Community Garden - Warm weather 2/9/26 Today was lovely sunshine and warmer weather. I worked on preparing for a volunteer day on Tuesday morning at 9 am. We plan to clear the ground for our compost bins between the parking lot and the walkway. In March, we are planing another workday to build the bins. My garden friends are filling out a survey to pick the best March Saturday.  I look forward to temps in the high 60's on Tuesday.  Thanks, Leigh
